چکیده

Poliomyelitis was a dreaded disease of devel oped countries, affecting tens of thousands of children and adults during each of the epidemic years up to the mid-1950s. The polio virus is a small RNA virus whose only natural host ap pears to be man. The vast majority of exposed persons develop either an inapparent infection or a non-specific flu-like illness (non-paralytic poliomyelitis). Secondary invasion of brain and spinal cord is associated with infection and death of motor neurons, with loss of innerva tion to muscle fibers, and consequent muscle weakness and atrophy. Postmortem studies show that muscle weakness in poliomyelitis is clinically apparent only when more than half of corresponding motor neurons are destroyed. Frequently, muscles can be reinnervated by healthy neighboring motor neurons by a pro cess of axonal sprouting. Thus, partial or com plete recovery of muscle bulk and strength can occur, in which subnormal numbers of motor neurons support increased (up to 8-fold) numbers of muscle fibers. It is estimated that about 250,000 people in the United States have survived paralytic poliomyelitis and are alive today.

Comparing Symptoms of Post-Polio Syndrome in Athlete and Non-Athlete Poliomyelitis Survivors

Purpose: Long term effects of poliomyelitis are known in many countries. Despite no definite label for these signs and symptoms, there is a remarkable similarity among patients with regard to description of the problems and complications of the disease. In this study, we compared the prevalence of symptoms of Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) in athlete and non-athlete poliomyelitis survivors. Methods...

Vaccine-derived poliomyelitis and postpolio syndrome: an Italian Cutter Incident

Post-polio syndrome is a condition characterized by increased muscle weakness, atrophy, fatigue and pain developing several years after the acute polio event. We describe a 52-year-old patient who experienced post-polio syndrome; he had contracted acute paralytic poliomyelitis at 12 months of age, shortly after the third dose of Salk polio vaccine.

Elevated blood lipids are uncommon in patients with post-polio syndrome – a cross sectional study

BACKGROUND The post-polio syndrome occurs in people who previously have had poliomyelitis. After the initial recovery, new or increasing neurologic symptoms occur. Inflammation and dyslipidaemia may play an important role in the development of atherosclerotic complications, for example myocardial infarction and angina pectoris. Previous studies on cardiovascular risk factors in the post-polio s...

Quantitative assessments of elbow flexor muscle performance using twitch interpolation in post-polio patients: no evidence for deterioration.

A large number of patients previously affected by polio have symptoms, including increased weakness and fatigue, which are collectively known as a post-polio syndrome. Prospective measurements of strength and endurance using twitch interpolation in post-polio patients are lacking and hence the exact rate of decline in muscle function in these patients is not well defined. We therefore measured ...
